Artist's Comments

No reference.

That's right. I'm continuing my practice of artwork with no reference, in an attempt to challenge myself and become a better artist.

As for crits, let me be clear that this is to HELP me. I would appreciate thoughts on my technique and style and my approach to what I've done, and maybe ways I could improve etc. My guy looks slightly cartoony also...

Um....
As for the actual content.... the ship. Is ugly, I know. But I'm not trying to make it look like the coolest thing alive, just practicing with shapes and... something unique. Possibly alien in design... but still super ugly.

Comments and thoughts always welcome :)

Yeah, I hate to agree with you on this but that ship is pretty bad. =P I generally think of spacefaring vessels as being more... fluid. Aerodynamic-looking, if you know what I mean. Or at least more compact, it looks like two ships just humping each other! haha

A bit more attention to the guy's left hand wouldn't hurt, it kind of looks like a last minute addition as it is. And the planet in the background, big blue one, looks very novice. Considering that the planet is the only dominant light source in the piece, it should have a bit more effort put into it, as opposed to some random paint streaks. And one last note, for the window borders, the lines don't look quite straight. I can guarantee a spaceship would not last long with oddly warped windows =P

On the other side of the fence, the dude's hair, the body, his pants, the moon, and the starry background: they all look great! Overall, this is a pretty damn good picture, way better than what I could do. Keep up the good work! :D
I'd like to see what this would look like if you touched up the things I mentioned above.

(Hey... You ASKED for advanced critique!)

It like it. 'its purty'. I think it's solid. The brush strokes of the planet give the picture style and identity. The textures are well done. The character looks a little broad but as you say, no reference.

Thank you for the feedback, everything you say is pretty much valid, and gives me something to think about :)

I'm glad you like it!

I also like the brush strokes of the planet too, and think that helped.

Thanks again :)

I agree with my the other guys before. The window borders definatly need to look more bulky to give a stable look.

Yeah, that ship is really an ugly little bastard ;-) To be honest I think it ruins the whole picture a bit, because everything else is done very very well. I would also try to make the shadows more chrisp, as in space you have no atmospheric distortion and very clear shadows.

Best wishes,
Jack

Perspective looks off, like not everything is going towards their respective vanishing points. I really like the look of the planet and the stars. The perspective is really the big thing that bugs me about the pic, other than that, very impressive.

I think you have done a very good job. I don't really have any crits, but I do have an idea. For a challenge, why not add the figure's reflection in the glass? If you try to do it in great detail, it would be a pain, but if you leave it kind of blurry, it could be relatively easy.

You're welcome my friend. Keep up the great work.
