Short version:
4 hours on the side of a highway in the cold and then in a tow truck.

Long version:

Heading out in the afternoon for a nice drive along the beach (i live on the bay) and then onto the range of mountains nearby, with dinner and gold class movies planned for later in the evening.
Wrong.

Fan belt snaps about half an hour in and then it's overheat city for the car. Well, girlfriend is driving, but whatever.
We pull up on the side of a highway and I take a look (and let me just say that.. if it was a computer, I could take one look and know exactly what was wrong, but with cars?....... ) anyway, I knew enough to be able to tell it was overheating, which the thermometre thing in the car told me anyway so gg genius. Anyway, so we call the... road side assistance people for our state, while it's storming and getting cold, and they come and say 'yep, fan belt, just gave out my last one an hour ago, i'll call in a mate who has a spare one' so another half hour goes past and my partner and i are sitting in the car playing talking games and what not.

New guy pulls up and says 'yep, fan belt, just gave out my last one' so obviously these clowns didn't actually communicate to each other because the whole point of him coming out was that he had one.. Anyway... so he calls us a tow truck (we're about an hour from home) and the truck comes about an hour later.. so 2 hours later after that we return home with just enough time to call a taxi (which was paid for by RACV - roadside assistance guys, thankfully) and go to the movies for the gold class session that we'd already paid for.
So yeah.
You have to laugh really, these things always happen to me.
But yeah, thought I'd share that.

Oh, I forgot to mention, we found a spare fan belt in the boot about half an hour into the tow truck wait, but by then it was too late to call it off apparently and I didn't know to fit one. GG
